Native Art Shield #17 with Sculpin and Thunderbird

Artist's notes

Sculpin and thunderbird shield on figured maple.

Design by Fred Anderson.

The Thunderbird is the most powerful of all supernatural animals in the Heilsuk culture, a great chief transformed. I believe the more beautiful the bird is, the better I can become. It is a manifestation of the spirit. This work was named "In Motion" because the creator says "if you don't move, I don't move". We cannot live life just waiting and wishing for things to happen. We need to put our lives in to motion.
